Trackademicks Loves Swing Out Sister

Posted on Jun 3rd, 2009

I have to thank my mom for the lovefest about to take place…

As a kid in the 80s, I really only listened to what my mom listened to- Wham!, Sade, Tears For Fears, Basia, and of course Swing Out Sister. These were groups I loved way before I could name a hip-hop group. About as close as it got to hip-hop in my house was Bob James’ “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” or the KING OF R&B’s best album “Don’t Be Cruel”…

Swing Out Sister’s brand of Sophisti-Pop is probably my biggest personal influence. Lush string arrangements, solid topic matter, fresh chords, and intelligent pop sensibility- a lot of the ideals I use to guide my own brand of SOPHISTI-SLAP (yes, term invented by me).

“Twilight World” is my favorite song from them, followed by HELLA others…

I only bring all this up now because I get to see them for the FIRST TIME EVER at Bimbo’s in San Francisco – Tonight!

And I’m taking my mom.
Do I seem excited?
Good.

Trackademicks with the Pharcyde at the Fillmore Tonight!

Posted on May 23rd, 2009

It’s going down tonight at the legendary Fillmore in SF!

I’m excited because I get the opportunity to rock with the Pharcyde – all four of them!

Its crazy because this group has achieved what many groups only aspire to… crafting a hip-hop “standard”. For real though, this song is on “Happy Birthday” status (and I’m not talking about the Birfday Song…).

An with that said, here’s one of my Pharcyde favorites… “She Said” (Jay Dee Remix)

See yall tonight!

Tanyademicks

Posted on May 13th, 2009

Despite a personal pet peeve against bands with people names (Why they make it hard on themselves? Hello, Chester French!) I’ve always rooted for Tanya Morgan ever since hearing their track “Pretty,” a charming lil number built on warbled BBD lyrics and a random Roy Orbison loop, sounding exactly like three friends hanging out and making music for no other reason than the fact that it’s fun to hang out with your friends and make music. Sound familiar?

They’re back this week with a new record called Brooklynatti – they’ve stepped up their production values (and promo hustle) but the vibe remains the same. As a bonus beat, they’ve also leaked “What We Do,” a collaboration with FG’s own Trackademicks, and you can download it for free at the Upper Playground blog.

Fool's Gold SXSW Recap

The Fool’s Gold After Dark showcase in Austin last week was insane in every possible way, from the turnout (line down the block and around the corner all night!) to the tunes, as the whole roster dropped stellar sets packed with new joints and dence detonators. Even when the sound unceremoniously got cut during Mehdi’s set due to arcane Austin liquor laws, he still managed to smash it! Kid Cudi came through and surprised us with a quick set, fans and well-wishers included everyone from Clinton Sparks and Steve “Buddy” Aoki to MCs like Curren$y, Mistah FAB and Izza Kizza, and an amazing time was had by all.

Thanks to everyone at Scion, Palm Door/Beauty Bar and Red Stripe for lending a hand, and thanks to all the shutterbugs who put their pics on Flickr to make this wrapup possible, Catch lost his camera while crowdsurfing shirtless later in the week (smoove….) but the FG Flip cam made it back alive with video.

If you have more pics or video from the night, send em in! (Update: like this!) Now hit the jump for the goods! See you next year AWWWWWWstin! Read More

Track Radio

Posted on Mar 9th, 2009

This Friday on The FADER’s “The Let Out” on East Village Radio, they had ATLien and Killer Mike associate Pill by to kick some rhymes, and whaddayaknow, one of the tracks he goes over just happens to be Trackademicks’ “Topsidin” instrumental from the “Enjoy What You Do / Topsidin” single (available here and everywhere else digital music is sold, vinyl on its way!) Sure, it’s a “freestyle” in the most literal sense, but as always it’s cool to hear other rappers on our stuff.

Elsewhere on the internet airwaves, you can listen to this extensive Trackademicks interview with Streets Is Talking Radio right here. “In the words of Mac Mall, this interview is full of ‘Nathan But Game,'” says Track. Grab it!
