All summer Jelly NYC has been throwing their free Pool Parties down at East River Park in Williamsburg. On Sunday, August 22nd we’re proud to present an all-FG takeover, which we’re proudly dubbing Pool’s Gold, because, well, why the hell not?
Get their early to stake your claim in front of the stage for the supa sounds of Chromeo, Kid Sister, The Suzan and Telephoned, with deejay sets by Treasure Fingers and Kingdom keeping it moving all day long. Then we head over to Brooklyn Bowl for an afterparty with Nick Catchdubs and Vin Sol on beat duties. See you there!
Fool’s Gold’s dynamic duo Telephoned have put together a joyful new mixtape, Keep Their Heads Ringin, just in time for their opening slot on Chromeo’s US tour (which kicked off this week with killer shows in DC and Philly and funks across North America for the rest of the summer).
Keep… gives listeners a perfect taste of the new sounds Maggie and producer Sammy Bananas have woven into their repertoire of party starting not-quite-cover songs. But don’t take our word for it, check what The FADER had to say when they premiered the tape this AM:
“As far as cover bands go, Telephoned’s probably not the one your cousin Lupo from Long Island’s gonna call to play his wedding. Taking their concept from the old game of telephone, the duo of Maggie Horn and Sammy Bananas translate popular music through their various personal filters for an off-the-wall end version of the initial song, drawing on influences which seem to include: NYC nightlife, Hot 97, general fun times, 1990s club music, sequins and neon x-rays. Their second mixtape sticks mostly to the top 40 R&B/rap bent of their first, twisting tracks everybody knows through their high-nightlife techno vision (though Chelley’s “Took the Night” and Teki Latex’s “Dinosaurs With Guns” both get the Telephoned treatment). A version of Donnis’ “Gone” is turned into a kind of screwed down, emo-club Dem Bow, while Rihanna’s “Rude Boy” and Jay-Z’s “On to the Next One” are warped into clamoring, post-Swizz pop art, with Bananas blessedly dipping his foot in the long lost genre of drill n bass.”
Check these great shots at Livin Cool from last week’s YoYo party in London featuring some of Fool’s Gold’s and Ed Banger’s finest! Telephoned play tonight in Sheffield, more Euro shows throughout the month.
This Thursday (6/10) our own Sammy Bananas and Telephoned will be performing at the always-jamming YoYo party at Notting Hill Arts Club in London. In a nice bit of timing, Busy P and Uffie will also be in the building, rocking for the Uffie album release. They’ll be joined by Ali Love along with the YoYo residents, Seb Chew and Leo Greenslade (one half of FG’s Greenmoney). Festivities! You don’t wanna miss this one.
Tomorrow night (6/2) Telephoned will be rocking Glasslands in Brooklyn as part of the Musebox 4th Anniversary party, along with Tobacco and free PBR (not a band name, the beer). Full details here, more T-Phoned summer show info coming very soon!
The duo also decided to liberate some more DJ friendly extended versions of tracks from their mixtape for all the selectors who have been supporting the project from jump. Go download this zip for Telephoned renditions of “Use Somebody,” “Don’t Go / No No No,” “Do You Mind,” “Turnin Me On” and “Million Dollar Bill.”
If you missed Telephoned knocking it out the park at our SXSW showcase, don’t fret: the dynamic duo hit the road this week for some shows on the coasts! Tour flyer with all dates and cities after the jump. Hometown fans can check them at Webster Hall this Friday for just $1 with RSVP!
To get in the mood, check out the latest creation from the Telephoned lab, a brand-new reworking of Kid Sister’s “Daydreaming” you can listen to at Spinner or download here. Sammy provides a tropical beat while Maggie channels some Dolores O’Riordan at the end for good measure. Summery! Read More
